Review of Dark City (1998) by Jesse O — 15 Mar 2011
Pretty fantastic sci-fi movie right here. I bought the blu-ray disc for this movie and it cost me all of TEN DOLLARS. With how good this movie is, it's definitely a fucking STEAL. If you like dystopian sci-fi flicks and you don't have this on your shelf, then I don't know what's your problem.
I'm not gonna claim it's the most original movie I've ever seen. But this movie is so well-written and so well put together that it manages to stand on its own without being the most innovative movie out there.
I thought the movie, visually, was very strong as well as thematically. There's some really interesting ideas and themes to this movie, so it also manages to challenge you intellectually. Which is what sci fi movies should always do, at least in my opinion.
And I really liked how the characters of the Strangers were presented, something very creepy to them. Personally, a lot of the movie felt to me, like the sci fi version of The Truman Show. Obviously, there's a lot of influences from Frtiz Lang's Metropolis and other films.
You can also see Dark City's influence in Inception, at least how architecturally and how the buildings in the Dark City's world are created and how they're created in Inception. But yea, I can't say enough good things about this movie.
Just a great piece in the sci fi genre. If the blu-ray is ten bucks then standard dvd should be less, so if you can spare the money you should definitely buy this movie as it's very underrated and not enough people know about this film.
