Review of Dark City (1998) by Richard L — 14 Apr 2012
The basic concept and the introduction are outstanding, as is the universe presented to the viewers, but the storyline unfolds in a superficial manner. Because of this, it's hard to get immersed in the movie about 30 minutes in and everything from that point onwards feel forced.
The plot dump towards the end really crashes the party. Even though it came before The Matrix (1999), Memento (2000) and Sin City (2005), this movie feels like a rather average patchwork of borrowed elements that fails because none of the themes, and none of the styles, are explored satisfactorily.
