Review of Dark City (1998) by Stefan G — 03 Aug 2012
This movie is a true work of art that sadly got swallowed up by The Matrix. That's a sad thing because it's so much better than the Matrix. The characters get so much development within 100 minutes that it's astounding, and they perform so well too.
The story is where it shines, and it stands out as an extremely unique concept that was more inspired than any popular 90's sci-fi movie. In fact, the plot feels like it belongs in one of those classic 70's sci-fi movies.
The presentation is the truly artistic part of the movie. The noir visuals aren't usually my thing, but they compliment the premise of the movie very well. Overall, if you had to pick between The Matrix and Dark City, pick Dark City, because it's a lot better.
