Review of Dark City (1998) by Kenneth B — 19 Nov 2012
Dark City is an inventive and thought provoking noir-ish science fiction. The film was built on a relatively modest budget but it looks great and the mood is played nigh on perfectly. This was a pleasant surprise when I saw it shortly after release and it still holds up very nicely.
A lot has been read into its similarities to The Matrix, which was release a year after. From the mysterious beginnings of the protagonist to the ideals behind the plot which question the very basis of reality and then the special effects, which include characters using their mind to control objects.
I watched both films today and Dark City actually came out on top for me but there's no reason the films cant co-exist, it is a coincidence that has occurred in the past, It's a Wonderful Life and A Matter of Life and Death were both release in 1946, they deal with similar issues and are both classics.
Dark City remains an underrated gem.
