Review of Dark City (1998) by Troy F — 30 Aug 2013
Dark City is a terrific dystopian picture. It has this strange feel to it that's interesting and discomforting, which is the exact mindset to have with this film. Rufus Sewell plays John, who wakes up in his hotel room with a hooker dead on the floor, but no memory or idea what is going on.
He seeks to find out who he is, but stumbles upon something greater about the people and the city. Like I said, it's an often strange film which maybe off-putting to others, but if you really dive into it more, you see that it's intended to be that way.
Dark City is very unique with terrific special effects, mixing science-fiction dystopia with a film noir style with detectives and beings from another world. It's a slow moving film and not meant to be action oriented, but its few action moments are great and the cast is terrific too, especially Kiefer Sutherland as the awkward Dr.
Schreber.
