Review of Dark City (1998) by Phoenix T — 08 May 2011
Dark City is by far one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever made. To me, everything about his film is flawless. The cinematography, the epic score, the writing, the acting, the direction. Alex Proyas truly created something visually stunning as well as thought-provoking with this piece. I first watched this when I was a young boy around 9 or 10, and even then I knew I was watching something special. Returning to it as a young adult, I'm still amazed at how moving Dark City truly is. Rufus Sewell is a great leading man in that he is an everyman. We can relate to him on his search for purpose, meaning, answers. William Hurt as the detective helps to add gravitas and intensity to the cast of characters. Jennifer Connelly is as lovely as ever, and of course Richard O'Brien as one of the menacing Strangers. This cast is perfect.
Probably my favorite movie of all time, I can revisit Dark City over and over and still be awed by the beauty of the cinematography, the questions the Alex Proyas raises in his script, and the sheer excitement of watching John Murdoch try to figure out just what the hell is going on.
