Review of Dark City (1950) by James M — 19 Apr 2010
Dark City is a sci-fi film noir film directed by Alex Proyas and staring Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, and Kiefer Sutherland.
The move starts with Murdock(Sewell) waking up in a hotel room with no recollection of who he is and how he got there. Even more mysterious there's a dead girl in the hotel room. He' being accused by the police of being a serial killer. Insepector Bumstead(Hurt) is going after him. At the same time Emma(Connelly) his wife is looking for him. As well as a strange doctor named Schreber(Sutherland) and mysterious men in black clothing are searching for him too.
I gotta say hands down the visuals are amazing. The set design is superb. Proyas's crew created a whole complete world. The film noir style is very nicley blended in to the daily lives of the characters. The foreboding shadows and dark alley ways and the mixing the genere of thriller and sci-fi is well handled. The acting is ver good and this is what you expect from a cast like this.
My only problem with the movie is the narrative. It felt unfocus and it was a hard movie to get in to towards the middle. Although later on it got back on it's path and the story resumes it's solid pace. The movie might be hard to get into, but the visuals and acting and an awesome twist to the story makes Dark City worth to watch.
MP **** 4/5.
