Review of Dark City (1950) by Ian R — 22 Sep 2010
Two of my favorite genres, noir and sci-fi, combine to make this loveable bastard child. Pretty difficult to give a spoiler-free description of this movie, but suffice to say, it's surprising that The Matrix was so successful and this movie completely flopped at the box office.
The Matrix is a fine film and deals with a lot of the same concepts, but I guess it has all that mass audience-appealing wire-fu stunt work, whereas this movie just has thinkin' and stuff. Not quite the ground-breaking masterpiece that Roger Ebert seems to think it is, but certainly an oft overlooked and original film that fans of either genres will enjoy immensely.
