Review of Daredevil (2003) by Josh R — 09 May 2011
Aspects of this film are very serious, dark, gritty, and violent. A nice job of taking the superhero genre and taking it seriously, rather than making it childish. EXCEPT for the aspects of the film that embarrassingly childish. For example, the playful fight scene between Elektra and Matt Murdock, when they first meet, is absolutely ridiculous is every way. It seems like a scene out of Power Rangers. Whenever I watch this movie, my liking for it goes up and down from scene to scene like a roller coaster. The director's cut, which is darker, has more ups than downs. But some of the worst downs are still present.
I also have to say that Jennifer Garner was a very poor casting choice for Elektra. The character of Elektra is supposed to be Greek, tough, and badass. Some genius in the casting department picked a whiter-than-white girly girl for the role. When Elektra is fighting and/or expressing toughness, it is simply not believable. Someone like Cote de Pablo would have been a MUCH better choice.
