Review of Daredevil (2003) by Xcv V — 20 May 2011
Aside from a surprisingly great performance from Ben Affleck, what else does "Daredevil" have going for it?
Short Answer: Not that much, Not being that much of a fan of the comics (However I do own the Brilliant "Guardian Devil" Written By Kevin Smith with an Introduction By Ben Affleck), The character has always intrigued me, "A man blinded in youth fights crime in his hometown "Hells Kitchen" while struggling against villiany and his beliefs.".
Though some got pretty preachy, the franchise has solely been built upon those symbolics to which the movie answers by offering visuals that are taken from the comic panels: Good, and a fight in a church drenched with shabby CGI: Lame.
Enter Daredevil A.K.A Matt Murdock, Played by Ben Affleck, for all the absolute cr*p this movie gets you see he is at least "into" the character (Ben being a big fan of the comics), As we see the Origins of how he came to be, we cut to the future Murdock where he is Lawyer by Day, Vigilante by Night and his Partner Frank played by Marvels equivilent to Michael Bay Jon Favreau (which in this performance gives another reason why he should just stick behind the camera and not in front of it).
Soon we are introduced to the Love interest Elektra Natchios, Played by Jennifer Gardner who is just ultimately miscast, she's a fine actress and everything she's done is so sweet and lovely, but Elektra is suppose to be this no bull-sh*t assasin with greek ancestry. And the two villians Bullseye, Played well enough by Colin Farrell and Kingpin played well enough by Michael Clark Duncan.
I would go into the story now, but there is virtually no narrative, or at least no interesting narrative, Ultimately this boils down to an Hour an a half of a few well choreographed yet half assed battle scenes, two songs by the Christian band "Evanescence" (Again reminding us how big they were at the time) and an obvious "Justice prevails" Climax...
You Know for such a strong belief heavy written character "Daredevil" is, it sure doesn't show in this movie, and to be honest I wouldn't really mind if the finished cut wasn't so horribly acted by the supporting cast, have CGI fight scenes that look blatantly fake and feature unimpressive costumes for everyone in the movie.
Upon Hearing of a Reboot for the series, I thought there could be hope yet and I would very much like Ben to keep with the character, But no, we might have JASON STATHAM on the way....
Final Verdict: A comic book movie featuring a very prominent lead, yet an unimpressive supporting cast, horrendous dialogue and story makes "Daredevil" hard to watch, and if you have any hope that the 30 minute Director's Cut can save the movie, No it can only add Coolio and more Blandness into the mix.
