Yes it's cliched ("Don't look back kids, don't look back" - in the best deep Pierce Brosnan accent I can muster :-)) but it is a thrill ride with brilliant direction from expert in the field of Volcanology Roger Donaldson.
Linda Hamilton is also well cast and the effects are brilliant. Excellent main theme from Newton Howard 2.
