Review of Danger: Diabolik (1968) by Francisco P — 10 Jun 2007
From the psychedelic opening credits to the cool last wink, this is an excellent study of how to make a low-budget film look stunning. Bava uses the usual techniques such as painted backgrounds that really look like huge sets and innovative special effects work (such as shooting the actors in slow-motion behind a water tank to simulate underwater action).
Ennio Morricone delivers one of the very best scores of his career here too. "Deep deep down... only you deep down... deepa deepa down...". The script could've used a little more polishment (It's from the same team who wrote Barbabella after all) but overall it stands as the best comic book film of the 60s.
