Review of Danger: Diabolik (1968) by Michael W — 29 Aug 2008
Mario Bava is among the versatile directors of all time. Bava is one of the masters of horror. He is known for helping to create the giallo genre. Danger: Diabolik, on the other hand, is not that. John Phillip Law plays one of the most likeable bad guys ever, Diabolik. He is essentially the anti-James Bond character. He's as smooth, as sexy, as cool, and as much of a badass as James Bond is, he just does evil things rather good. Hell, I'd say he's even more badass than James Bond. The dude steals 10 million dollars and has sex with his blonde bombshell of a girlfriend in a huge pile of that money. He's so cool the Beastie Boys paid tribute to him with their music video for "Body Movin".
Alright, enough with how cool Diabolik is and on to how Mario Bava makes him so cool. This film is straight 60's. My god is it ever. Thanks to Bava's always brilliant visuals this film comes to life in the generation it was made. The colors, the cinematography, the beautiful sets, and of course the costumes and clothes.
A lot of people consider this a "good bad movie" since MST3K decided to do commentary on it. Those people are wrong. This is just a damn good film. Please do yourself a favor and see this film. You won't regret it.
