Review of Dandelion (2004) by Helena K — 24 May 2010
The plot feels contrived, formulaic, and rather listless despite its attempts to be singular. I haven't seen Vincent Kartheiser (I actually prefer to refer to him as Connor or Pete; he just doesn't look like a Vincent to me) play any part badly, and his turn as shit-on Mason Mullich is no exception.
Taryn Manning, too, really makes herself at home in even the most uncomfortable of roles as she does here as Danny Voss, a directionless small-town girl stifled by her possessive mother. Michelle Forbes, as aforementioned possessive mother, is just as unaffectedly creepy as she is on True Blood, but without all the sex and murder.
Mare Winningham, it should be said, knocks the goddamned ball out of the park in her role as Layla Mullich, Mason's quiet-yet-clearly-on-the-verge mother. It's a visually beautiful film as well.
Great composition, colors, use of negative space. It's like a moving photograph; I really enjoyed looking at it.
