Review of Dances with Wolves (1990) by Tommy H — 05 Apr 2015
It all felt like a big cartoon to me. The romance is trying so hard to be heartwarming every time Costner flashes his goofy grin I expect a thought balloon to come out of his head with a beating Valentine heart inside.
I was disappointed not to see a naked baby with angel wings shoot Costner with an arrow. And when the movie isn't trying to charm us with the romance every character is trying to be cute. Even the battle scenes are done with a romantic flare.
But it's a Costner flick. It's a male fantasy and a historical drama and if you see it with your girlfriend you'll probably get laid. Costner always makes respectable movies, though. It's a masterpiece in the genre of whatever this movie belongs.
I guess I just like my cowboys and Indians stories with a little more grit.
