Review of Dances with Wolves (1990) by Amanda B — 12 Aug 2010

I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. You have to overlook Costner's wooden acting and narration, and the simplistic and contrived storytelling, and Mary McDonnell's awful performance, and the fact that Costner's character is practically Christ-like (bullets don't hit him!).

But besides all that, it's pretty easy to get swept up in the film's rhythms, even for four hours. The cinematography and score aren't bad at all, although they're not great either. I dunno, I guess I just figured this would be offensively bad, but I really didn't mind it that much.
