Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Matty S — 21 Jan 2014
One of the most rebellious and subversive musicals ever made, Lars von Trier literally turns the concept of musicals inside-out. The film itself is inventive, unique and devastatingly brutal. Perhaps the most interesting gesture made by von Trier is his pointing out that almost all movie musicals are custom made to manipulate and martyr something.
The Hollywood musical conceit comes from heartache and busted dreams. However, as is his want, Lars von Trier pushes his agenda to an apocalyptic and Nihilistic point that may be a few inches further than the average audience would ever want to go.
An amazing and vastly impressive film.
