Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Ashley T — 04 Feb 2009
Ummm, WTF was that!? This movie is so over-the-top and manipulative. Come on, a courtroom musical number with tap dancing?! A prison guard that comforts prisoners with hugs? Don't even get me started on the blindness, the money, and a number of other elements of the story.
And the camera work is awful. There's a fine line between artistic brilliance of some low-budget films shot on digital cameras, and the amateurism you see here. I feel sorry for Catherine Deneuve and David Morse, who seem to be stuck here almost against their will, but Bjork and von Trier should be ashamed of themselves.
