Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Joshua S — 15 Aug 2010
One of the only two movie musicals I actually like. A movie that definitely deserved the Palm 'd Or (and SHOULD have won some Oscars. It didn't even get nominated!), it is about an east European girl, Selma (played by Bjork), who moves to America with her young son.
She expects to find hapiness, singing, love, and dancing. Basically, she expects her new life in America to be a musical. Her life instead turns out to be working a factory job just while slowly going blind.
She trys to scrape up enough money for her son to get an operation. Bjork does a fantastic job in her last big screen role and composed the film too. Lars von Trier does a magnificant job switching from the drab, digital handheld camera life that is reality to Selma's dreamlike musical sequences filmed with professional cameras.
The switch makes you that much more attached to Selma and the ending that much more powerful. All in all, one of my favorite movies and one you should definitely check out.
