Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Michael J — 29 Apr 2011
Selma has one goal: To get a better life for her son, and she will stop at nothing to achieve this. It is her selflessness and joy that made me see hope in even the darkest of situations that her character went through, in the same way that she was able to imagine musical numbers, no matter the circumstances.
Selma might seem a bit naive at the beginning, but not at all. She is one of the strongest and smartest female characters I've ever seen on film.
As devastating as this movie is, it has so much hope and wonder it makes the experience almost unbearable, but once it's over, I would even say it's potentially life changing.
No one should miss this movie.
