Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Arturo V — 28 Jun 2011
A very emotional movie. It was effective and gut wrenching in many parts. I really truly felt for the characters. What was awkward was how the gritty realism of the visual style meets the more fantastic musical scenes.
I think part of the problem was that a hand held camera would suddenly become a still camera during the musical scenes. This made for a jarring transition. It was a good story interrupted by singing. Even though the story is perhaps a bit over the top, it still felt real to me.
And I'm not so sure these things don't happen in real life. Real life often is like a cruel joke God plays on all of us. I believed it.
