Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Matt M — 27 Jan 2013
An ambitious project by an ambitious and provocative director. Here, Von Trier's famous Dogma style is recalled and remixed with a zest of Hollywood magic, as the lead character has a penchant for turning her life into a musical as a form of everyday escapism.
That lead character is portrayed quite beautifully by Bjork, in one of the sweetest and most fragile performances the big screen has ever seen. Dancer in the Dark is a film that still feels ahead of its time in technique, but quite timeless in content.
