Review of Dance of the Dead (2008) by Johnny T — 21 Mar 2011
I liked this, I really did. It seems like it'll be a sad ripoff of so many other zombie / high school cliches, but somehow it comes into its own halfway through, and really kicks off. Yes, there are all the expected cliches.
.. but it doesn't grate. In fact, it's probably got some of the darker metaphors I've seen hidden on this side of funny, in a long time; the funeral home, the extraordinarily bittersweet last dance, the cannibalistic kiss in the toilet that went into some really dark places.
.. it's a bit of Shaun, a bit of Zombieland, a bit of Dead Set, a bit of Resident Evil, and weirdly enough, a heavy dose of Back To The Future's prom. It was weird, but a fun weird. And there's enough references / tributes to a LOT of the horror classics to make it a little trip down memory lane as well.
