Review of Dan in Real Life (2007) by Christopher G — 08 Dec 2009
Dan in Real Life is a cute little movie. A widower with three daughters gets together with his family for the holidays. He forms an instant connection with a woman he meets at a bookstore, but complications arise when she shows up at the family gathering as his brother's new girlfriend.
Steve Carell plays Dan as sort of a toned-down, less awkward version of his character from The Office. The ensemble is strong, especially Dan's daughters, even if the writing isn't all that great. I'm not a big fan of Dane Cook.
It's cute and saccharine and predictable, but it's an enjoyable movie for anyone who's been in complicated love situations. It hits up a lot of cliches, but it also has a lot of fortune-cookie style one-liners about the nature and experience of love and hey, what else do you need from a movie like this?
