Review of Dan in Real Life (2007) by Eric D — 06 Apr 2010
It's hard to watch Steve Carell in any role (or even in real life) without seeing him predominantly as Michael Scott from 'The Office.' I think that was actually detrimental to trying to watch him in a more "in-touch" role such as the one he plays in this. It's not that he's not believable, it's that I kept feeling like it was a more "in control" Michael Scott.
Still, the movie is reasonably well done. It's funny when it needs to be (quite, at times), and heartwarming when the formula calls for it, and awkward for every other moment. It's believable to some extent, though they have the most activity-driven family I've ever seen in my life.
Definitely a rainy/snow-day or pick-me-up movie.
