The simple fact is Dan in Real Life is trying to squeeze a full film out of roughly 30 minutes of plot. This is done with a fair few scenes which could realistically be cut and the film would've lost nothing.
Too often slipped into cliche, which is unfortunate because that stifles the originality which makes it a decent movie.
