Review of Dan in Real Life (2007) by Luxo J — 21 Dec 2010
Low key and easy going, this is a terrific film.
Dialing back the crazier elements of his comic persona, Steve Carell drives this film with a wonderfully judged performance as Dan a widower bringing up 3 daughters on his own. You can feel his isolation from his wider family and you can't help but will him to find some hapiness. He is truly excellent.
It also helps when you have a cast including John Mahoney, Dianne Wiest, Amyy Ryan and Juliette Binoche who are total pro's at this kind of thing. It was also great to see the awesome Alison Pill turn up as well as one of Dan's daughters. The acting is so natural and the family dynamics feels real and lived in.
One of those films that sneaks up on you and takes you by surprise, it is a genuinely warm tale that I am looking forward to visiting again.
