Review of Damsels in Distress (2012) by Rahsaan C — 28 Apr 2012
Stillman's Damsels was quite enjoyable. Specifically, because the entire production makes fun of itself throughout. Almost every character aside from Lily Analeigh Tipton) is a clichà (C) unto his or herself, but in a way that's lovable.
Seriously, who didn't know people like this in college? The pretentiously liberal do-gooders who made it their goal to save everyone from themselves... all while ignoring their own flawed existences.
The doofus, frat boys and the smarmy "playboy operator types!" That being said, Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) was... hands-down... my favorite character. Between her aloof and icy observations and her complete and utter physical meltdowns when confronted with B.
O. (a reality of the community-style living in college dorms... believe me), she often stole every scene. (I look forward to seeing more of Echikunwoke!) There are some key lessons learned about relationships and being true to one's self that many of us went through at this tender age of self-discovery.
Nothing that beats you over the head, like a hammer though. Just sit back, and enjoy the delightfully odd cast of characters. By the way, awesome score. A movie is nothing without a winning score.
