Review of Damsels in Distress (2012) by Andy W — 04 Sep 2012
I'll admit, I've never understood Whit Stillman's style of film-making, and I'm still not entirely sure I get it - But this film is one of the weirdest, loopiest indie films I've seen in a long time. A sort of "nice" anti-Heathers, it follows a clique of upstanding young ladies who seek to help depressed students, but with an extremely skewed outlook of the world.
Absolutely hilarious in places, brilliantly played by the actors, it's an extremely oddball film which won't appeal to a wide audience - In fact, I kept hearing myself thinking "Who IS the audience of this film???"; in some ways I'm amazed it was ever made. The script is often more than self-aware, and it does dip into some annoying moments, but on the whole it is a barking mad, bright 'n breezy comedy.
