Review of Dallas Buyers Club (2013) by Oxana . — 12 Jun 2014
Watched this to see Jared Leto's performance, but the rest of the movie was quite nice as well.
Ron (Matthew McConaughey) is a guy who lives hard, plays hard - and has a hard time believing he is HIV positive when his doctor tells him so. After a bout of much expect denial, he begins seeking options for treatments, finding that there are some things money can't buy.
Figuring out an alternative route to extended life and health, Ron travels the world, creates a business to help himself and the others sharing his predicament - and befriends Rayon, a trans woman, making in her an unlikely ally.
It was interesting to see the period's take on HIV, from a single person's prejudice to the system that doesn't actually work in favor of the people within it.
I felt that Leto's performance wasn't perhaps as noteworthy as the buzz suggested, but it was a positive experience to watch Ron grow as a person into someone who better understands his new community, and those he used to have trouble accepting in the first place.
