It's really amazing when you can have actors so convincing that their characters seem like they're right in front of you. Matthew McConaughey is literally an acting genius in this film, and while some may say that this is an Oscar-bait performance, I disagree.
While it does seem that way, he does an amazing job. Perhaps one of the most motivation movies ever.
