Review of Dallas Buyers Club (2013) by James S — 29 Mar 2015
Rightly rivalling the other oscar nominees, 'Dallas Buyers Club' is an admirable and enjoyable portrayal of one mans quest to conquer HIV and Aids. Initially the aim of Ron is purely to cure his own issues, however the story takes an interesting twist, so as to concentrate on overthrowing the governments approach to curing the disease. The character development is superbly done; particularly McConaughey, who demonstrates the somewhat dramatic change in attitude towards the situation. As his friends and world around him desert him, he takes refuge with those he once dismayed. It is this interaction that is fascinating to watch, particularly the unlikely friendship with Jared Leto's character.
Admid debates as to best actor, McConaughey is truly superb, in my opinion on par with DiCaprios performance in 'Wolf of Wall Street'. Due to the premise and theme of this film, I would however give the nod to McConaughey. Leto was also a worthy nominee of an accolade, as it is surely one of the most challenging type of roles to play. Overall a very enjoyable and interesting adventure, centred around a very topical and undeniably terrifying subject.
