Review of Dahmer (2002) by Patience W — 18 Feb 2010
Dahmer, directed by David Jacobson, focuses on small moments and aspects of serial killer and rapist Jeffrey Dahmer. I thought that making this film more of a "character study" was a good idea.
However, the writing is not so great, especially the ending. The ending came so abruptly and it was possibly one of the worst endings to a film I have ever seen. This movie wasn't awful, but it also wasn't great.
In fact, I think that the only reason that I don't truly dislike this movie is because of Jeremy Renner's portrayal of Dahmer. I've seen plenty of movies that had to be held up by an actor, but this one certainly stands out.
Jeremy Renner is such an excellent actor and he really shows it here. It's a good thing that I had prior knowledge of Jeffrey Dahmer, or else, I think I would have been really confused by the ending.
The movie didn't need to show all of the media buzz that this story got or even re enact the trial. However, it would have made a major and positive difference if it had shown how Jeffrey was caught and his arrest.
