Review of Dagon (2001) by Sam Wise — 01 Jan 2009
This film does a pretty good job of adapting the often unfilmable work of Lovecraft (although The Shadow Over Innsmouth is probably one of his more filmic stories), but falls flat when it strays from the text.
The opening boat crash stuff is strange and unnecessary, and the climax, while broadly touching the same points as the story, does so in a way that strips out all the horror and looks all the world like an ill-advised Star Wars homage, even down to the paternal revelations and dialogue about destiny.
