Review of Dad's Army (2016) by Martin C — 13 Feb 2016
I used to love Dad's Army when I was a boy, but having seen the trailers of the new film in the cinema in recent months, I was left unimpressed at the lack of comedy moments in the trailers. So I wasn't planning to see this film but my wife was keen so we went with our two boys, aged 13 and 11.
Other reviewers have commented on the film having a poor plot, so I went along not expecting much but hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I shouldn't have bothered - the film was even worse than I feared.
The good points were Bill Nighy playing Sergeant Wilson, his mannerisms and character portrayal for me were spot on. Toby Jones was very good as Captain Mainwaring and I also enjoyed Michael Gambon as Private Godrey; in fact all the casting was good in resembling the original characters.
What really let this film down was the lack of humour. I think I laughed once and smiled a few times, but that was it. To be honest I found the film boring, and found it difficult to stay awake. I should have stayed at home and watched a few repeats from the TV series, would have been far more fun.
