Review of Daddy's Home 2 (2017) by Marcel A — 13 Dec 2017
Despite my general aversion to Mark Wahlberg, 2015's 'Daddy's Home' was a pleasant enough family comedy that put the former Funky Buncher's unlikely chemistry with Will Ferrell to good use as squabbling parents competing for their kids' affections.
Having peacefully settled their differences by movie's end, these characters have nowhere else to go story-wise, a fact this inevitable sequel proves by stunt-casting Mel Gibson and John Lithgow as their own fathers, each a more extreme version of the son.
"Hilarity ensues", right? Wrong...so, so wrong. Lazily plotted and completely devoid of any genuine laughs, this awful holiday caper will test the goodwill of even the most forgiving moviegoer.
Its overstuffed cast lacks a single believable character for us to care about (not even the usually-endearing Lithgow). Honestly, I can't find a single nice thing to say about this giant lump of coal.
['Coal' was not my first choice of descriptor, but I'm being nice 'cause it's Christmas.] Seriously, avoid this lame turkey at all costs.
