Review of Dabangg (2010) by Gautham R — 16 Sep 2010

Well, I think this review is going to be at odds with most peoples' perception of the movie as well as their personal experience!!!

I thought this was a very average movie, verging on the mediocre! The story progresses at a snails pace, making the first half rather tedious and you're sat there waiting for the interval, in the hope that the popcorn will be more exciting!! The second half gets a bit better, but overall its a huge disappointment.

The movie works only because of Salman Khan. It may as well be called The Salman Khan Show, but he delivers, like always, and how!! He plays the character of Inspector Chulbul "Robin Hood" Pandey with great conviction, showing an innocence and vulnerability in an otherwise hardcore corrupt police officer. I don't think anyone else could've pulled this off so convincingly.

Sonakshi Sinha makes an impressive debut ,looks good and appears comfortable in front of the camera, she's gonna go a long way. Her resemblance to Reena Roy, however, is a bit eerie!!!

A lot has been made of the stunts in the movie, but its nothing we havnt seen before, and the theme is repeated all the way through the movie, culminating in the now notorious "flying shirt" of Salman Khan!! Besides, how many times can you watch people leaping across buildings and flying through the air and still be entertained by it??!!

The absolute winner in the movie has got to be the song "Munni". The entire picturisation, tune, Malaika's latkas and jhatkas, everything is a pleasure to watch and experience. That in itself deserves one of the two stars given!!

So, as you can see, this review isn't quite what one would expect, but then there you go.

If, and thats a BIG if, you're prepared to leave your brains at the door, suspend all reality for 3 hours and are a big Salman Kahn fan, then you'll have a whale of a time in this one, otherwise, be prepared to be totally underwhelmed like I was!!! Proceed, but with caution!
