Review of Cyrus (2010) by Andy W — 27 Feb 2011
Cyrus is interesting. Rented it for a date night, but it's a terrible date night movie. The cinematography is a mixed bag of indie goodness or indie badness depending on what type of cinematography you enjoy. It's got a very close-up feel, with a bit of shaky cam added in and some shots look like they're more from a documentary then anything else.
The acting is the real star of the film. John C. Reilly pulls off a serious, believable character and Marissa Tomei as usual pulls off an awesome performance. Jonah Hill is the real standout star though because he proves he can handle a very serious role and make it actually convincing. You'll hate him and you'll feel sorry for him, so definitely see it for Jonah Hill doing something completely out of his believed element.
Cyrus is a bit of an odd duck, it's labeled more as a comedy, but it's more of a dramedy...actually it's a very heavy dramedy. It really takes a look at adult children and some of the problems posed by that while at the same time, examining the oddities of relationships today in America. I highly recommend it if you like indie flicks. If you don't...then I'd stay far away from it because the cinematography and direction will throw some people off. Indie style is definitely not for everyone.
