Review of Cyrus (2010) by John M — 30 Mar 2011
Out of all the John C. Reilly movies out there, I would say that this is the one that does the best job showcasing the full extent of his talents. It's the new romantic comedy from the Duplass brothers, a pair of directors I have had my eye on since 2008's Baghead.
I say romantic comedy, but don't think that this is your standard formula. It's about this down-on-his-luck guy (Reilly) who goes to a party and has instant chemistry with a lady he meets (Marisa Tomei).
They enter a relationship, but immediate complications arise when he meets her son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). It has a really awkward sense of humor, especially in the beginning, and not everybody will go for it, but I fell for it very quickly, laughing out loud a number of times.
I've never seen John C. Reilly used more effectively than he is here. After sitting through Step Brothers (an excruciating experience for me), I was getting pretty sick of him just doing the same shtick over and over again.
They use him perfectly here, playing to all of his strengths and none of his weaknesses, and I can honestly say that I haven't liked him this much since his P.T. Anderson days. It has sweet foundations, a funny script and is a very pleasant surprise.
