Review of Cyrus (2010) by Ana B — 16 Oct 2011

Half way between comedy and melodrama this is the story of John, a lonely divorced editor. Pushed by his ex-wife and best friend, Jamie, John goes to a party where he meets Molly a yummy mummy with a 21 year old son called Cyrus. They both fall for each other and, soon after,they start to live together, however Cyrus has a complete different game plan going on and he will try to wreck their relationship in any possible way.

There are some funny and ironic moments but this is a portrayal of a dysfunctional relationship between a mother and her awkward and twisted son. The situations are so commonplace that everybody can relate a little to it, the little lies, the hear say, the "he said that you said", the psycological manipulation of a sad young man uncapable to share his mum. It is all sweet though, nothing over the top. My only complain is that the action moves very quickly at the beginning but I appreciate the simplicity of the plot and the lack of pretentiousness.
