Review of Cyrus (2010) by Bob S — 20 Jan 2012
This dramedy surprised me by being far more of a compelling drama than the slapstick comedy I presumed a Reilly/Hill feature would be. However, I could see many younger comedy fans turned off by the mature topics of divorce, single parenting and the difficulties children have accepting their parentâ(TM)s new relationships.
Reilly truly displays the breadth of his acting ability which includes a drunken party where his character, John, bears his soul, meets the love of his life and dances unabashedly to Human Leagueâ(TM)s apropos âDon't You Want Me.
â? The filmâ(TM)s brilliant humor lies in each characterâ(TM)s eccentricities and how, while peculiar to the viewer, feels genuine and normal to them. The serious confrontations between John and his girlfriendâ(TM)s son are so amusing because of how straight the actors play each farcical scene.
