Cyrus is one of those movies that's labeled a comedy but is not remotely funny. It's almost as if genre is determined by what actors are in the movie and what the director chose as a color scheme.

But anyway, I enjoyed this movie a lot. At times, it made me enormously uncomfortable, which was its intention I'm sure. Some good acting and audacity in the writing and directing really propel it forward.

What's truly remarkable about this movie though, separating it from other strange and uncomfortable indie comedies, is the humanity with which the subject is treated. This easily could have been an exercise in "Look at how weird this guy is! Let's laugh at him" but it wasn't at all.

It makes you mad at Cyrus, but towards the end, it makes his position very human and almost lovable. Pity and/or mocking would be the easy route to take, and I give the film a lot of credit for avoiding that altogether.
