Review of Cyrus (2010) by Cameron J — 16 Oct 2011
There is nothing worse than a misleading trailer. In the trailer Cyrus is portrayed to be a full-blown comedy, its not, what it is, is a really subtle indie/black-comedy. I feel that many went into the movie expecting endless gags and for that reason alone they have marked it down. That said, I donâ(TM)t think this film is great.
The film never really engages you, it just flutters on the spot. Choosing to focus less on the utterly hilarious Cyrus and more on a blossoming romance between Molly and John, which blossoms at paint-dry speed. It takes itself way to seriously that it misses so many punchlines and you spend a good hour waiting for this movie to step up, luckily it fucking does.
When the rivalry for Mollyâ(TM)s affection becomes clear, John and Cyrus turn on each other and thatâ(TM)s when the movie finally moves out of neutral but itâ(TM)s all too late. I mean I laughed hard about five/six times in the last half an hour, but I still these final spouts fail to save the film from being very mediocre. I mean John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill are hilarious together when they finally get that screen time and I feel that the Duplass brothers (who are set in their indie-ways) really missed a trick here. Itâ(TM)s not that iâ(TM)m dissapointed with the percentage of laughs packed into Cyrus, iâ(TM)m just pissed off that the initial story was so boring.
Final Word: two-thirds boring, one-third funny and highly mediocreâ¦.
