Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) by Tamara M — 07 Jan 2008
This is the role that Gerard Depardieu was born to play, and he inhabits it with such perfect zeal, flair, pathos, and-- yes-- panache, that it is hard to imagine anyone else as Cyrano. The rest of the cast are wonderful, but Depardieu owns every scene he's in.
The subtitles are from the superb, dynamic 1971 translation by Anthony Burgess, so it is very enjoyable even without fluent French. Gorgeous visuals, admirable direction and camera work. It is the epitome of what a production of Cyrano ought to be, and is an absolute classic.
