Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) by Barnaby E — 01 Feb 2009
This is a romance to end all romances. The beauty of the cinematography coupled with the elegance of the words being spoken, alongside the exquiste playing of the characters, all add up to a heartbreaking and tragic story that draws you in and makes you care about the fate of Cyrano and Roxanne.
The subtitles are wonderfully translated, which give us non-French speakers a chance to appreciate the poetry and majesty of the words. Multiple viewings are recommended, so that you stop studying the subtitles and start savouring the film as a delicious whole.
A modern masterpiece of foreign cinema.
