Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) by Jake R — 22 Mar 2009
Great production of one of my favorite stories. The performances are of course wonderful but I am usually most struck by the imaginative staging. For example, when you read the play, you might wonder how Cyrano gets away with insulting de Valvert for such a long time in Act I.
Every other production I've seen has Valvert stewing in mute petulance before suddenly bursting forth, apparently for no particular reason. This movie shows us a dramatic reason for the delay in the form of a bit of business around a coach.
Top notch. My children like this movie too. Adeo admires the sword fighting (very sloppy and realistic) and Athan admires (what else?) Cyrano's fashion sense and used to dress up like him a couple years ago!
