Review of Cutthroat Island (1995) by Troy F — 06 Jul 2012
Cutthroat Island doesn't try to be much more than an all out swashbuckling action picture, and it succeeds greatly at that with stunning action scenes and special effects. However, the film can be a bit slow at times and Geena Davis doesn't really make herself out to be a convincing pirate, appearing ruthless in some scenes and well.
.. the opposite in others. Matthew Modine is well... charming and likable I suppose and Frank Langella makes for a corny but menacing villian, and though the dialogue is corny and forced, it wittiness brings upon a fun chemistry between the two leads.
Everyone has that one film they really like for no truly sensible reason, and aside from the numerous flaws Cutthroat Island is one of those films. There's nothing that remarkable about it, but I really REALLY enjoy watching it and somehow I can honestly watch it a dozen more times.
Cutthroat Island is great at what it was set it to do, and should be acknowledged as damn great dumb action fun!
