Review of Cutthroat Island (1995) by Peter A — 24 Jun 2013
I see now why this bombed the way it did. Geena Davis tries to look like she's into her character and the action, but she was a wrong fit for Morgan Adams. Matthew Modine was also a wrong fit for his role as Shaw.
The script and dialogue are a wreck. The action is intense though. I think in the right hands with a better cast and under better conditions, Cutthroat Island could've been a pretty good pirate film, definitely with more action/adventure and with less romantic comedy.
Sorry, but the pirate realism like slavery and a human scalp treasure map pretty much pillages any romantic notions introduced by the film. The idea of a strong female pirate captain on a Hamlet-like side quest to kill her uncle in order to avenge her father makes for an intriguing story.
Too bad they sacrificed such an opportunity to explore for multiple explosions and bad quips.
