Review of Cut Bank (2014) by Ryan S — 12 Mar 2015
The colorful affectations of the dialogue in this film really required a stronger lead than the cipher that is Liam Hemsworth, with his hangdog eyes and zombie delivery. Pretty much the entire cast outside of him are A-listers, and everyone does their damnedest to keep this thing lively and interesting.
Even Teresa Palmer and the always welcome Michael Stuhlbarg, both who are given pretty much nothing to do with their characters, keep the proceedings rolling along apace better than Hemsworth. Director Matt Shakman, branching out from the limiting set pieces of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, really wants this to be his Fargo.
What he comes up with instead is more like The Ice Harvest minus that films biting wit. The 'p-p-parcel' macguffin is a total non-starter, and the ending is such a feel-goody bow-tying slog that I can't really conclude with anything other than the rumination that actors gotta eat too, I guess.
