I can't really speak for the historical accuracy (or lack thereof) in this film... I will say that Hollywood probably took some liberties with the facts in order to shape this otherwise completely entertaining western.
It's a great film all on it's own, but the ever fantastic Robert Shaw is the real reason to watch!
I liked it!
